Richard Martin died from wounds on 30th April, 1915, after having been brought back to the United Kingdom but as yet, there is no information as to when and where he was wounded. The 1st Royal West Kent battalion was part of 13 Brigade, 5th Division, that, during April, 1915, had been involved in heavy fighting around Ypres first at Hill 60 in the middle of the month an later during the Battle of Gravenstafel Ridge.
